The Grand Rapids Herald began in 1892 as a daily newspaper. Around the Christmas holidays, as a gift to subscribers and not wanting to distribute the typical company calendar, the Herald had another, better idea. They would create a special tribute honoring the newsboys who delivered/sold the newspapers.

Each booklet is 16 pages and contains various poems by Edgar A. Guest Huntil 1931.. The last year in the collection had poems by Harry Glass, a local Grand Rapids poet.

Each booklet is also a celebration of the upcoming New Year. Right after the Depression, I don’t think a Happy New Year booklet was produced, understandably. The years included are: 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929 (two copies), and 1931. On of the booklets (1925) has some child’s crayon artistry on several pages.

Each year has a different graphic and, as you can see from the photos, some of them are really neat, especially the one from 1926. On several of the back covers, there’;s the likeness of a newsboy.

Overall, the booklets are in good shape for being nearly a hundred years old.
