Alfred E.Brown was born in 1860 in England ,moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and opened a wholesale seed company in 1885.
The company quickly grew to be a national wholesale grower, importer, and dealer of high-quality vegetable and flower seeds.
Headquarter were established on Ottawa Street in Grand Rapids.
The last known catalog for the company is dated 1924. The company seems to have operated until the late 1920s.
This very rare cloth seed bag measures14 x 17 1/2 inches . I’m guessing the bag is from the very early 1900s.
What makes this bag so special is the logo on the front.
The graphics are two-colored, with a green background showing various vegetables. Printed over this green backdrop is the red logo with what looks like a jester holding a pumpkin.
I’ve seen a few advertising catalogs for the company over the years, but never a seed sack.
As you can see from the photos the bag and graphics are in great shape, especially for being over a hundred years old.
If you collect rare seed bags, this one would be great for framing.
